Privacy Policy
In short
- No account, no name, no email address. No analytics, no ads, no tracking. Nothing is sold.
- Your measurements, photos and projects stay on your iPhone, and in your own iCloud Drive if iCloud is on. Trulevel has no server that receives them.
- The camera and the motion sensors are used on the iPhone only. No picture or reading leaves it unless you share it yourself.
- The one purchase, Trulevel Pro, goes through Apple. RevenueCat checks it for us under a random identifier that is not linked to you. We never see your card or your Apple account.
- You delete your data in the app, in iCloud Drive, or by deleting the app.
1. Who we are
Trulevel is an iPhone app for measuring: a spirit level, a ruler, a protractor and the calculators that go with them. It is published by an individual developer, referred to here as “the developer of Trulevel”, “we” or “us”.
The developer of Trulevel is the controller of the little personal data described in this policy and can be reached at app.trulevel@proton.me.
2. What we do not collect
- No account. The app never asks for your name, email address, phone number or a password.
- No analytics, ads or tracking. The app contains no analytics, advertising or crash-reporting software, uses no advertising identifier and does not track you across apps or websites.
- No location, contacts or microphone. The app does not ask for them.
- No copy of your measurements. Nothing you measure, save or photograph is sent to a server of ours. We have none that could receive it.
- Nothing sold. We do not sell personal data and do not share it for advertising.
3. What stays on your iPhone
The following is kept on your device, in the app’s own storage:
- the readings you save, in Recent and in your projects, with their notes;
- your projects, their photos and the marks you draw on them;
- your calibrations and calibration profiles, your vehicles for RV levelling and their hitched reading;
- your settings, such as units, sounds and auto-hold;
- whether Pro is unlocked, so it works offline.
The files are in a private folder that only the app, its widgets and its controls can read. iOS file protection encrypts them when your iPhone has a passcode. They are included in your own device backups (iCloud Backup, or a backup to your computer) if you have backups turned on, under Apple’s terms and your settings.
Export. A project can be exported as a CSV or PDF file, and a result can be copied or shared. The file or the text goes only where you choose in the share sheet; the app sends it nowhere by itself.
4. Your iCloud Drive
When iCloud Drive is on for Trulevel, the app keeps a copy of your saved readings, projects and photos in your own iCloud Drive, in a folder named Trulevel that you can see in the Files app. That is how a new iPhone, or a reinstall, finds your projects again, and how two iPhones on the same Apple account stay in step. Your settings and calibrations are not copied.
This copy is stored by Apple in your iCloud account, under Apple’s privacy policy and your iCloud settings. It is not a server of ours, and we cannot see it. To stop the copy, turn Trulevel off under Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Drive on your iPhone.
5. Camera, photos and motion
- Camera. The app asks for the camera to show what you lay an angle or a level line on, and to take photos to mark up. The picture is processed on your iPhone and is not recorded unless you take a photo. A photo you take is kept in the app (section 3), not added to your photo library.
- Photos. A photo is picked with the system picker. The app receives only the photo you pick and has no other access to your library.
- Motion. The level, Tilt and RV levelling read the iPhone’s motion sensors, which needs no permission. The readings are worked out on the device and kept only when you save one.
- Sound. The level tone and the spoken reading are made on the iPhone. The app does not use the microphone.
6. Widgets, controls, Siri and Apple Watch
- Widgets and controls read the app’s files on your iPhone (the last result, whether Pro is unlocked, your units) and draw them. They send nothing anywhere.
- Siri and Shortcuts open a tool, or say, copy or file the last result, on your iPhone. The app sends nothing to them beyond what you ask it to say or copy. What Siri does with your voice is under Apple’s terms.
- Apple Watch. With Pro, the level’s reading is sent from your iPhone to your paired watch, directly through Apple’s watch connection, while the level is open and the watch app is on screen. The watch only shows it.
7. The purchase
The four tools are free. Trulevel Pro is a single purchase through Apple’s In-App Purchase. Apple handles the payment; we never see your card details or your Apple account.
To know whether Pro is unlocked, including when a member of your family bought it, the app uses RevenueCat, a service that checks purchases for us and acts as our processor. For this:
- When it first opens, the app makes a random identifier on your iPhone. It is not derived from your name, your Apple account or your device, and it is kept in the iPhone’s Keychain, so a reinstall keeps it.
- When the app opens, it asks RevenueCat whether that identifier has Pro, and fetches the current price. When you buy or restore, it sends the purchase that Apple confirmed.
- RevenueCat receives the random identifier, the iPhone’s identifier for vendor (an identifier iOS gives to one developer’s apps on a device), the purchase and its details from Apple (the product, the price and currency, the date, the App Store country), and basic device and app information (such as the app and iOS versions, the device model and the language). As with any internet service, it also sees the connection’s IP address.
None of this is linked to your name or used to track you. This is what the app’s privacy label on the App Store lists as data not linked to you: Purchases and Identifiers, used for the app’s functionality. RevenueCat’s own handling is described in RevenueCat’s privacy policy; Apple’s in Apple’s privacy policy.
Apple’s reports. If you chose to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone’s settings, Apple may show us crash reports and usage figures that do not identify you.
8. Deleting your data
- A saved reading: slide its row to the left, or touch and hold it and tap Delete.
- A photo: touch and hold it and tap Delete photo.
- A project: open it, tap the … button, then Delete project. Its photos are deleted; its readings stay in Recent, where you can delete them too.
- A vehicle or a calibration profile: in its sheet, Delete vehicle or Delete profile. Reset to factory in the calibration sheet removes a calibration.
- Everything on the iPhone: delete the app. Its files, widgets and settings go with it. Only the random purchase identifier can stay in the Keychain, so that Pro stays attached to the same install.
- The copy in iCloud Drive: what you delete in the app is also deleted there while iCloud Drive is on. To remove the whole copy, delete the Trulevel folder in the Files app (iCloud Drive), or open Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage → Trulevel on your iPhone and delete its data.
- RevenueCat’s record: it holds no name or email, so we cannot look you up. Write to us with the date of the purchase and the order ID on Apple’s receipt email, and we will look for the record and have it deleted. Apple keeps its own record of the purchase.
9. Support emails and this website
If you write to us, we receive your email address and what you wrote, and use them only to answer you. Our mailbox is hosted by Proton. We delete support emails when they are no longer needed, and on request.
This website sets no cookies, runs no scripts and loads nothing from other sites. Its host, Cloudflare, processes your IP address and standard request data to deliver and protect it.
10. Service providers and where data goes
We share data only with the providers below, and only for the purposes described here.
| Provider | Role | Data | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| RevenueCat | Checks the purchase (processor) | Random identifier, identifier for vendor, purchase details, basic device and app information, IP address | United States |
| Apple | App Store, payment, iCloud Drive, device backups, the watch connection | As described in Apple’s privacy policy and your settings | Worldwide |
| Cloudflare | Hosts this website | IP address and request data, in transit | Global network |
| Proton | Support mailbox | Emails you send us | Switzerland and the European Economic Area |
Your measurements, photos and projects stay on your iPhone and in your own iCloud Drive, wherever you are. The purchase data RevenueCat processes may be processed outside your country, in particular in the United States. Where the GDPR or the UK GDPR applies, such transfers rely on the safeguards those laws provide for: an adequacy decision where one exists, or standard contractual clauses in the provider’s data processing terms.
Purchase records are kept by RevenueCat and Apple under their own retention rules. We may disclose information when the law requires it; as we hold no names and no measurements, there is very little we could disclose.
11. Your rights
We use the data above only to tell the app whether Pro is unlocked and to answer you. We do not use it for advertising or profiling, and we make no automated decisions about you. Where the GDPR or the UK GDPR applies, the legal basis for checking the purchase is the performance of a contract (Article 6(1)(b)), and for answering emails our legitimate interest in helping you (Article 6(1)(f)).
Under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, Swiss law, the CCPA in California, the LGPD in Brazil and similar laws, you may have the right to access your personal data, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict its processing, and to receive it in a portable form. In practice, nearly everything is on your iPhone and in your iCloud Drive, where you can see, export and delete it yourself (section 8). For the purchase record, write to us as section 8 says. We answer within one month, and it costs nothing. You also have the right to complain to the data protection authority where you live or work.
We do not sell or share personal information for advertising, and have not done so in the past twelve months.
12. Children
Trulevel is a tool for everyone and is rated 4+. It collects nothing from anyone beyond the purchase check described above, and nothing that identifies a child.
13. Changes
We will update this policy when the app or its providers change, and change the date at the top.
